Five Tips for Boating Safely in California

Memorial Day officially kicks off the summer season, and in southern California, that often means it’s time to take advantage of the sunshine and spend as much time as possible enjoying the beach. Many residents and vacationers choose to soak up the sun by speeding along on a personal watercraft or coasting along the shore on a boat. The following tips will help you and your loved ones avoid injury in a boating accident:

Take a boating class – Learning how to properly operate a boat as well as any safety procedures will help prepare you for dangerous situations that may arise. Take a local community class or even an online tutorial to learn as much as possible.

Check the weather – Always check the local weather forecast before setting sail. If there are high winds, darkening clouds, or a chance of rain on the horizon, avoid boating till the weather clears.

Wear a proper life jacket – Whether or not you are a strong swimmer, always wear a life jacket or personal floatation device (PFD) when out on the water. Protect your family and friends by having each person fitted and assigned a PFD before departure.

Stay sober –Alcohol increases the risk of injury to yourself and others in a boating accident. It’s better to be safe and avoid alcohol until you are on land and not supervising children or other swimmers.

Learn to swim – The American Red Cross and other organizations offer swimming lessons for all ages. Boating safely also means knowing how to swim.
