Joseph H. Low IV has secured some of the most significant trial outcomes in the country, including a $145 million combined jury verdict and settlements in John Doe v. PG&E—one of the largest results of its kind. Across civil, criminal, and military courts, his work has led to more than $414 million in verdicts and settlements, reflecting a career defined by preparation, leverage, and belief in the case.
That same approach drives results in every courtroom. In a road design case against Caltrans, the State had offered just $7 million before trial. After Mr. Low deposed the defense’s road design expert and reframed the theory of liability, the case ultimately resolved for $12 million, delivering justice without compromise.
Mr. Low’s record includes a wide range of complex, high-stakes matters. In Shelby v. SeaRiver Maritime Inc., a Jones Act case, he and his team recovered $8 million for benzene poisoning after securing critical expert admissions. In Mongtale, et al. v. Nadeau, et al., where plaintiffs were severely injured, Mr. Low achieved a $4.6 million settlement—far exceeding the $100,000 policy limit—using trial techniques he now teaches to lawyers nationwide.
More recently, his courtroom victories include verdicts of $10.5 million, $11 million, and a $22 million confidential settlement in 2025, underscoring a consistent ability to deliver results when the stakes are highest.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Low tried and won the precedent-setting case for the Constitution’s 6th Amendment right to a “lawyer of your choice” in the United States Supreme Court case of U.S. v. Gonzalez-Lopez 548 U.S. 140 (2006). Mr. Low’s victory ensures that all defendants can hire the lawyer of their choosing, even if that lawyer is from another state.

Although Nevadans voted to legalize medical marijuana in 2000, there was no legally recognized system to sell or distribute. Mr. Low argued his client’s case to the Nevada Supreme Court and spoke before the Nevada Senate Judiciary Committee to advise lawmakers on how to structure marijuana laws, including recognizing cards from other states. In 2013, Nevada changed its laws to allow patients to buy marijuana legally from a dispensary. State of Nevada v. Schwingdorf.
Joseph Low is also nationally known for his work representing servicemen — Army Rangers, Navy SEALs, Special Forces, and Marines — accused of combat crimes. In the history of military war crime trials, Mr. Low is credited with being the first and only attorney to introduce Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as defenses to capital murder. Mr. Low is undefeated in military court, winning famous murder cases such as the Pendleton 8, U.S. v. Sgt. Nelson and U.S. v. Sgt. Acevedo.
In the internationally televised trial, coined “The Pendleton 8,” a jury found Cpl. Magincalda Not Guilty of murder and kidnapping. When Joseph first met his client in jail, he stood charged with the death penalty. Joseph walked his client out of jail the day of the verdict. Today, Mr. Magincalda is a practicing attorney in the State of Texas.
In U.S. v. Sgt Nelson, the Government charged Nelson with a combat murder and had five videotaped confessions. As a result of Mr. Low’s strategic representation, the case was dismissed.
In U.S. v. Sgt Acevedo, combat crimes for murder were dismissed after Mr. Low’s devastating cross-examination of witnesses at the Article 32 hearing. When the government stripped Sgt. Acevedo of his silver star, Low fought hard and got it back. Joseph Low fights. Joseph Low wins.
