Bicyclist Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver in LA County

By Joseph Low on August 9, 2013

Police are still searching for the driver of a silver convertible Ford Mustang who struck a 38-year-old bicyclist at an intersection in Northridge and then sped off. The bicyclist was taken to the nearest hospital where he died a few hours later.

According to police, the biker was crossing the intersection at Plummer St. and Winnetka Ave. around 9 pm when he was struck by a car. Using surveillance footage from the scene, police were able to identify the vehicle believed to be connected to the accident, which had been abandoned just a few blocks away.

The maximum penalty for a fatal hit-and-run collision in California is up to four years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. However, the aftermath of a fatal bike accident goes well beyond simply punishing the at-fault party. For the victim’s family, recovery can be an unending process of struggling with the loss of consortium after a loved one dies, as well as the financial impact of funeral costs and the loss of the loved one’s wages.
