Rear End Car Accident FAQ In Southern California

By Joseph Low on March 25, 2016

Rear end car accidents are the most common car accident type, accounting for 28 percent of all car accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These accidents are frequently the result of distraction, carelessness, or negligence on the part of the driver of the rear car. Here’s are some common questions we hear about rear end accidents.

Whose fault is a rear end accident?

In most rear end accidents, the driver of the rear vehicle is considered partly or totally at fault. This has led to a myth that the rear driver is always at fault. However, this may not be the case. For example, if the front driver reverses suddenly, has non-working brake lights, or stops in the middle of the road without turning on hazard lights, the rear end accident may be determined not to be the rear driver’s fault.

By Joseph Low on January 21, 2016

A 23-year-old Long Beach man was killed and three passengers were critically injured when their car skidded off the Pacific Coast Highway and into a light pole. According to witnesses, the vehicle was speeding on the highway when it spun sideways, slid toward the south curb, and collided with the light pole. Witnesses claimed that it appeared the driver had lost control of the car.

Emergency crews took the vehicle’s three injured passengers, an 18-year-old woman and two 16-year-old boys, to local hospitals for injury treatment. AARP Classes Help Older Drivers Become Safer Drivers

By Joseph Low on November 4, 2014

Drivers over age 50 face a number of challenges that younger drivers don’t face. This fact surprises many older drivers, who assume that their decades of experience must help them drive more safely.  But the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and many experienced California car accident lawyers recognize that older drivers need the tools to help them drive safely.

The AARP offers driving classes aimed specifically at drivers age 50 and older.  The classes can be taken online or at one of many locations in southern California.  Although you do not need to be an AARP member to take the class, AARP members do receive a discount on the cost of enrollment.

By Joseph Low on January 14, 2014

California driver's license in a wallet

With arrival of the New Year, California drivers will have a variety of new laws to obey that will hopefully make the roads safer and help prevent traffic accidents. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), at least six new laws will go into effect as of January 1 and will be enforced by police departments and highway patrol across the state.

Two laws that are particularly relevant to southern California drivers address dangerous driving behaviors that cause a significant number of accidents each year.

Distracted Drivers

While it is prohibited for drivers of all ages to use a mobile device while behind the wheel, whether manual or hands-free, SB-194 targets drivers under the age of 18 directly in order to emphasize the importance of eliminating distracted driving behavior.

When it comes to vehicle safety, the emphasis tends to be on safe driving and avoiding collisions; however, the risk of fire is another major concern for Los Angeles County motorists. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, the majority of vehicle deaths are caused by fires following an auto accident, and 45% of people injured by vehicle fires were attempting to control the blaze.

Latest NHTSA Guidelines May Backfire on Preventing Distracted Driving

By Joseph Low on July 8, 2013

Earlier this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed a new set of rules that would limit in-vehicle “infotainment” systems in the hopes of reducing the risk of distracted driving accidents. The guidelines were announced in response to the growing trend among automakers of installing dashboard technology that allows drivers to access music, driving directions, weather reports, and more via touch screen or voice command.

The NHTSA argues that whether or not in-vehicle technology is voice commanded, it should be restricted to only a few functions unless the vehicle is parked.
